This is amazing! thank you so much :)
ReplyDeleteSo my hair is naturally wavy and goes just past my shoulders. I have sideswept bangs that I straighten nearly everyday because my blow dryer just doesn't cut it. I use my curling iron for that because it curls and straightens. I am going to Russia and I was wondering, if I have the adapter for the different voltage there... am I allowed to take a curling iron with?
ReplyDeleteIf it fits in your luggage easily you may take a curling iron, keep in mind that there is not a lot of time to do your hair in the morning.
DeleteThank you!! Did you get a list like this from your mission or the MTC? Or did you kind of just figure it out? I'm nervous that I'm gonna take extra or miss something!
ReplyDeleteThis is everything I took, plus some extra suggestions from other missionaries.
DeleteThank you so much!!
ReplyDeleteI'm printing this out!! Thankyou!!!
ReplyDeletethanks!!! i'm so new to this whole mission thing (and lds for that matter) so thanks for taking the time to put this together! very helpful :)
ReplyDeletein terms of bedding, do i have to bring my own pillow and comforter? I read somewhere that you can buy your pillow and blanket at the MTC but I'm going to the Mexico MTC. I don't even know if that makes a difference but... yeah...
ReplyDeleteI would recommend packing a very lightweight blanket of your own. You will not need to bring a pillow as they are usually provided for you, but definitely take 2 pillowcases. I was in the Guatemala MTC and they provided all of the bedding, but it was a huge comfort to have my own blanket and pillowcases.
DeleteThis may seem silly...but iPods are allowed? I didn't realize they would be...where do you keep them while you're on your mission? Or does all the music loaded to it need to be stuff you can listen to on your mission?
ReplyDeleteThis is a great breakdown! :)
You are allowed to have a music player in most missions but it depends on the rules set by your mission president. You are generally only allowed EFY music, Hymns, Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and other LDS artist music. You are NEVER allowed to use headphones. If you take an ipod it cannot have wifi capability and must have en external speaker.
DeleteDo you know if classical music is allowed?
DeleteMusic allowed heavily depends on your mission President. I recommend writing a letter to your mission President or his wife before the mission and ask them any questions you have.
DeleteThank you! This is great! Would you suggest buying clothes immediately or waiting till you know where you are going? For weather in different places, how much does that change what you bring? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, wait till you have your call and then Research, Research, Research!!! What are the average temps? What seasons are the longest? And what style of clothing will fit the best? Like, if you are going to Thailand you don't need winter things, you will want rain gear and light loose clothing. Or New York you will want to pack a lot of warm clothes and want to pay more attention to style because that maters more there. And so on..... So my tip is wait and then RESEARCH!!!!
DeleteDon't buy clothing until you know where you're going! The materials you'll want to be wearing, the thickness of your clothing, how much of one style... it will differ according to where you are called. :)
DeleteDefinitely wait! It would make a HUGE different if you went to say, Brazil or Minnesota.
DeleteYou are a life-saver! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! this is spectacular! Thanks! Quick question though: what is the music situation for the MTC? I'm going to Tahiti and already know the do's and dont's for music there, but I'll be in the MTC for 11 weeks haha so is an iPod allowed for working out? or no?
ReplyDeleteNot if you will be wearing headphones. Headphones are strictly off-limits in the MTC and mission, so don't even take them!
DeleteDo you know if there are hangers provided in the Mexico MTC? My son leaves this next Wednesday morning and I can't find the answer to this anywhere. Thx!
ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with the Mexico MTC as I was in the Guatemala MTC. They had a few hangers but they were all left behind by other missionaries.
DeleteGreat list! A few other suggestions I've just come up with just this week as we're packing for my son to leave next week.
ReplyDelete-A small pocket calculator (for adding up grocery store items while shopping)
-A calling card for the airport phone call they make as they are traveling from the MTC to their mission.
-A small spray bottle (to relax wrinkles)
-Some simple, quick recipes.
-Thin binder/folder of favorite General Conference talks. (Also, translated into the language or your mission -- can be done instantly on LDS.org.)
OH MY GOODNESS. Thank you sooo much for posting this! You are wonderful!!!
ReplyDeleteQuick question! Hopefully you see this, it's pretty far back! Would you suggest taking separate shoes for pday than exercise? Such as vans for pday and nikes for exercise or just taking one or the other and use them for both? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI recommend taking only one pair of shoes for pday and exercising. Oftentimes, missionaries get together to play soccer (if you go to a Latin country especially) or another sport. Its just easier to wear the same pair for everything and its better for packing.
DeleteIt's really a nice and helpful piece of information. I'm glad that you shared this helpful info with us. Please keep us informed like this.
